Trauma-Informed Pedagogy

Teaching courses on political violence and conflict requires attention to how this material may affect students. Emerging research on secondary trauma finds that both students and researchers are prone to developing secondary trauma through exposure to violent content (See [here] and [here].) Additionally, an instructor, I do not know what experiences, both past or present, that my students bring into the classroom. My goal is to help students engage with difficult material without being adversely affected by it.
